Brighthill + River City
Better Together
A message from Pastor David
-
Hello, River City and Brighthill,
I want to share something important, and something I genuinely believe is good news for us.
Over the past season, leaders from The Foursquare Northwest District, Brighthill, and River City have spent intentional time praying, fasting, listening, and discerning what God is doing; not just in our churches, but in our city. And what’s become increasingly clear is this: God is inviting River City and Brighthill into something together.
With joy and confidence, I want you to know that River City and Brighthill are coming together to become one church family. Beginning March 15, we will gather as one church, meeting Sundays at 10:00 AM at the current River City building (708 W. Nora).
Some things will change. We’ll be unifying under the name Brighthill Church, and over time our teams, rhythms, and systems will come together. But some of the most important things are not changing; our commitment to Jesus, our love for people, our heart for this city, and our deep belief in the value of every person who calls Brighthill or River City home.
I’m deeply grateful for Pastor Bobby and his faithful leadership at River City. He has led this community with care and integrity. We bless him and cheer him on with gratitude.
As I now joyfully receive the baton of leadership from Pastor Bobby and we become Brighthill Church together, I want you to know how genuinely excited I am to be your pastor. I don’t take this lightly. I’m filled with hope for what God will do as we walk forward together.
The apostle Paul wrote to the church in Philippi:
Philippians 1:3-6
3 I thank my God every time I remember you. 4 In all my prayers for all of you, I always pray with joy 5 because of your partnership in the gospel from the first day until now, 6 being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.
As we partner together in the Gospel, I am confident that God is doing a good work that he will be faithful to carry on to completion. Of this we can be certain! I truly believe this unification positions us to reach more people, disciple more deeply, and show up for our city with greater strength.
In the weeks ahead, we’ll communicate clearly, listen carefully, and do our best to lead with humility and care. More details will come, but for now, I invite you to pray with us, trust with us, and step into this season with open hands and open hearts.
I truly believe our best days are ahead. God is not finished with this story and we are better together.
With gratitude and hope,
David Lewellyn
Lead Pastor, Brighthill Church -
I am writing you today to share my excitement for the days ahead. 11 years ago the Lord called my wife and I to plant River City Foursquare Church. About a year and a half ago we began to feel the Lord’s direction into something new; and about 3 months ago our council and I began to work with the Foursquare district leaders on a transition timeline. We also discussed options and continued to pray and seek God together. Through this process the Lord has made clear what the Lord wants, and we have reached a decision. The next lead pastor is going to be David Lewellyn. David has been a guest speaker to the River City community many times over these past 11 years. David was also one of my interns 22 years ago! While I have gotten to serve Jesus over these past 22 years in different capacities, I have continued to stay connected with David. David has a clear understanding of the Scriptures and a heart to seek and save the lost! He has an amazing family that also share the Lord’s heart for the lost! Dave Chandler is here today to let you know what the next steps are, as far as our church goes.
I want to reiterate that I am very excited for the Lord’s direction and vision in this process and for what the Lord plans for His body! He is so faithful. It will also be strengthening for His church, that includes you!
I will continue to pray for you during this transition and trust that you will be doing the same as you seek where God will use you to His glory and grace.
Serving our King together,
Bobby

Some things will remain familiar, and some things will change. Our goal is not to erase the past, but to build a shared future where the best of both churches continues to shape who we are. Changes will be made thoughtfully and pastorally, with a focus on health, mission, and unity—not simply comfort, consensus, or preference. We want people to feel honored in what has been, and excited about what God is doing through us together.
-
River City and Brighthill share a heart for families and children. Together, we hope to strengthen and expand ministries for kids, youth, and families as we move forward. By combining our people, resources, and gifts, we believe we can create new opportunities for children and youth to encounter Jesus and grow in community. We'll invest in continuing to develop a strong kids ministry that is safe, Jesus-focused, and fun.
-
Eventually, giving will be unified as part of our shared future as Brighthill Church. Clear communication will be provided regarding giving platforms, the timing of transitions, and financial transparency. All funds will be stewarded responsibly and in alignment with the mission we are stepping into together.
-
Yes. Brighthill Church will continue to be a Foursquare church. Foursquare is a healthy, global movement that helps support local churches through accountability, mission, leadership development, and shared resources. At the same time, our primary identity is as a Jesus-centered church, committed to the authority of Scripture and the mission of helping people take their next steps with Jesus. Our partnership with Foursquare strengthens that mission without defining or limiting it.
-
All of those responses are normal and welcome. This season holds gratitude for what has been, joy in fresh vision, grief for what is changing, hope for what God is doing next, and trust in God’s guidance. It’s okay to take time to process your emotions. We encourage you to pray, talk with a trusted leader, or share with someone you trust. Your feelings do not determine your place here. We want to walk together honestly and patiently, giving space for everyone to belong as we move forward.

We understand that this transition may not be right for everyone.
If you sense God leading you elsewhere, we want to bless you—not pressure you. Our hope is always that people would be rooted in a healthy church community, whether that is our church or elsewhere. Our hope is you’ll take time to pray and experience the combined community before making a decision.
-
Please pray:
Gratitude toGod for his goodness.
Unity and humility among all leaders and members
Clear leadership and wisdom in every decision
Peace and comfort for those grieving change
Fruitfulness for the mission ahead, including:
That those who are lost would find Jesus
That God would continue to grow and guide our ministries for years to come
That we would see people take their next steps with Jesus.
God’s presence to guide every step and inspire vision for the future

We encourage you to bring your questions, thoughts, and concerns directly to pastors, trusted leaders, or members of the transition team. This helps us listen well, respond with care, and avoid misunderstandings or speculation. We are committed to walking together honestly, patiently, and respectfully during this season of change.
